ApMet Uses BNet to Manage Uncertainty in Weather Prediction
Randy Lefevre, head of ApMet consulting and former US Air Force Lt. Col. and Chief Meteorologist for the Airborne Laser Program Element Office, recently used BNet.Builder to demonstrate the use of belief networks in providing unique clarity in representing and explaining uncertainty in meteorological forecasting. He delivered a paper summarizing the results of his work at the 21st International Conference on Interactive Information Processing Systems (IIPS) for Meteorology, Oceanography, and Hydrology. See the conference program here: http://ams.confex.com/ams/Annual2005/techprogram/program_268.htm

Simulation Tool AnyLogic Uses BNet.EngineKit
XJ Technologies recently used a Beta version of BNet.EngineKit to implement belief networks in their simulation tool, AnyLogic. A demonstration of the technology is available in a Java applet at this link: http://www.xjtek.com/models/agent_based_models .

Andrei Borshchev, CEO of XJ Technologies, said 'A number of our clients have been asking us to include belief networks in AnyLogic. We are pleased that BNet.EngineKit will make it simple and easy for them to do that.'

User Tip: Rapid CPT Data Entry
BNet.Builder offers a number of ways to speed up entering data into probability tables. One good example is entering the same values into multiple rows in a CPT. The value for each cell could be entered one at a time, but if the table is large, then filling in each cell by hand becomes time consuming.

One good way to speed things up is to group cells that need the same values together and set all of the values at once. Here is how:

- Click and drag column headers for the parent nodes until all rows that need to have similar values are together.

- Highlight the rows which need to have the same values by clicking on the row headers. Hold down the control key and click on other rows if you need to add more.

- Set the values all at once using the value sliders or by entering the numbers in the fields above the value sliders.

Of course, you can also copy and paste values from one row to another, or from Excel or other spreadsheets.
