Modeling What Happens Between Emotional Antecedents and Emotional Consequents

This paper discusses modeling some elements of emotion processing that occur between the initial recognition of an emotional situation and the processing of the effects of the resulting emotion or emotions on the behavior and mental processing of the agent. Topics that are addressed include: how the emotions are represented internally, how their intensity is determined, and how they combine with other emotions. We survey a variety of existing approaches to modeling these processes and point out some common pitfalls. We describe the approaches used in the Em emotion architecture, which has been used successfully for building a number of emotional agents.
