Founded in 1983, Charles River Analytics has developed a variety of custom intelligent systems across our Government and commercial customer base. Our unique approach to the development of advanced mission-relevant systems is rooted in our core philosophy of effectively and efficiently connecting the human decision-maker to available data and actors, human or machine, supporting their mission. This philosophy drives us towards a system design and engineering process that fully integrates special-purpose technologies into systems that fully realize the needs of the human decision-maker utilizing those technologies within their own mission-specific workflows.

To implement this philosophy, Charles River is organized in four technical divisions with clear coordination and collaboration objectives across our divisions’ combined technology development efforts. This multi-disciplinary collaboration allows us to achieve the vision of formally linking raw data to computational analysis to decision support, and finally to effective human/machine integration.

Sensor Processing and Networking

The Sensor Processing and Networking division develops and markets advanced software algorithms and integrated systems for image processing (feature extraction, pattern recognition, object detection and classification, tracking and motion analysis, etc.), security and surveillance, navigation,  EW/signal processing, sensor fusion, and robot autonomy.  Our research and products span the ground, sea, airborne, and space domains.  We’ve built up an extensive in-house library of sensor and computer vision software components (VisionKit®) which allows us to rapidly design, prototype, and evaluate customized solutions for our customers’ most perplexing problems. Whether it’s designing an innovative low cost solution or achieving revolutionary new system performance capabilities, our talented engineers, scientists, and project managers always find a way to make it happen.

Decision Management Systems

The Decision Management Systems division is focused on using cutting-edge artificial intelligence research and development to create custom software systems that help users make better decisions in complex, dynamic environments. We do innovative research and development in areas such as: automated and human-machine planning and optimization, probabilistic reasoning, machine learning, multi-source data fusion, data exploration, natural language processing, and semantic representations and reasoning. We apply these techniques in domains such as: malware analysis and defense; firmware and avionics testing; intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) planning; processing, exploitation, and dissemination (PED) of intelligence products; space situation awareness (SSA); missile defense; and torpedo defense.

Socio-Cognitive Systems

The Socio-Cognitive Systems division focuses on socio-cultural modeling, human performance assessment, human sensing, and the development of software to support intelligence analysis and information operations. The work performed by our team of accomplished scientists and engineers regularly leads to the successful deployment of software for Government users, as well as peer-reviewed publications. We also invest heavily in the development of core technologies that keep us at the leading edge of providing innovative research in new domains, while we collaborate closely with operational communities to ensure the practical relevance of our products.

Human Effectiveness

The Human Effectiveness division combines expertise in work analysis, user interface design, and software development to ensure the successful integration of human operators with complex technologies. Our efforts regularly extend the science and application of human-automation interaction and training, resulting in innovative support tools across a diverse range of operational domains. These include battlespace management and visualization, combat- and medical-skill acquisition, and unmanned vehicle supervision. Our tightly integrated teams of scientists, designers, and software engineers work closely with end users and domain experts. We apply proven human-centered system engineering methods to develop solutions that are intuitive, useful, and engender appropriate trust and reliance in automation and autonomous systems operation.
