Charles River Analytics Awarded Two Contracts for DARPA’s RSPACE Program in Distributed Planning and Assessment for Air Operations

Charles River Analytics Inc. is partnering on two contracts to support the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the Resilient Synchronized Planning and Assessment for the Contested Environment (RSPACE) program. The program aims to develop software decision aids to assist command and control operators in managing complex military operations. If communication is limited, small teams would still be able to continue operations and respond to battlespace events as they occur. Charles River is addressing two areas under the RSPACE program through its efforts with Systems and Technology Research (STR) and Raytheon Company.

Charles River is supporting STR in their design and development of a Distributed Planning and Assessment Suite (DPASS).

“We’re providing the STR team with human-machine interaction design expertise,” said Dr. Ryan Kilgore, Vice President, Human Effectiveness Division. “We’re working with operators and planning experts to drive the design and evaluation of intuitive, automated support tools for air operations planning.”

Charles River is also part of Raytheon’s team addressing the Distributed Software Infrastructure and System Integration task in RSPACE.

“One major system integration challenge we’re addressing is getting various software components that think and communicate differently to work together towards a common goal,” said Mr. Brad Rosenberg, Principal Scientist at Charles River. “By applying our expertise and technology in data representation and reasoning, we’re making it easier for systems to interoperate in a distributed fashion.”

For the RSPACE program, Charles River is building on technology in information extraction and interpretation it is developing under numerous efforts. Within these efforts, such as the Smart Information Grid for Operations Assessment, or SIGOPS, Charles River Analytics applies knowledge-driven fusion of heterogeneous information for dynamic re-planning, operations monitoring, and assessments.

Charles River’s contributions to the RSPACE program adds to its growing dominance supporting revolutionary research and development (R&D) led by DARPA, including the Strategic Technology Office’s (STO) Distributed Battle Management (DBM), the Information Innovation Office (I2O) Insight, I2O’s Vetting Commodity IT Software and Firmware (VET), and I2O’s Probabilistic Programming for Advancing Machine Learning (PPAML). For instance, in the INTERAACT effort for I2O’s Insight program, Charles River designed a unified human-machine interface (HMI) for analysts. In the APPRIL effort for I2O’s PPAML program, Charles River aims to simplify machine learning by enhancing and applying its probabilistic programming language, Figaro™.
